Talking point: Pineau, who also teaches at McGill University, was already involved in what is arguably Meta’s largest commercial endeavour: building the metaverse. “With this change, we elevate the importance of AI research as an essential ingredient to the long-term success of the company and our products,” Cox wrote in an internal note obtained by The Verge. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said his ultimate goal is to have the company become a leader in artificial general intelligence, the wonky term for the quest for autonomous, self-learning and self-understanding AI systems.
