Talking point: Staff at both stores voted earlier this month, and their bargaining units are looking to address protecting workers’ rights, among other things. Some staff told the Toronto Star that the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated their concerns. An Indigo spokesperson said the company has had an “unwavering” commitment to worker and customer safety. Workplace-safety concerns during the pandemic, especially for staff without the option to work from home, has prompted those at other companies to consider unionizing, including Amazon’s warehouse staff. The Teamsters union voted at its international convention in late June to help Amazon’s U.S. and Canadian warehouse and transportation workers unionize.
