Volta Energy Solutions, a unit of copper producer Solus Advanced Materials, will spend $750 million to start up a plant in Granby, Que., and hire 260 workers to make copper foil, a key input in semiconductors and EV batteries. A federal government press release did not say whether the venture would get federal funding, while Investissement Québec is loaning $150 million. (The Logic)
Talking point: The company’s website says it has already secured a site and broken ground, and plans to expand as an “aggressive response to demands in North America.” “We have to go fast,” said Quebec Premier François Legault at a press conference Tuesday. As my colleague Jesse and I reported earlier this year, there has been a rush of interest in luring battery suppliers, including copper-foil makers, to invest in Canada to secure bigger gigafactory investments in the country from LG and Volkswagen. Foil is a missing piece of the domestic battery supply chain, an industry that North American officials hope to reshore amid a shift to battery-powered electric vehicles.
