President Donald Trump will link the status of tariffs on Canada to the review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), said U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra. (Global News)
Talking point: “I’m not sure they’ll be totally removed,” Hoekstra said of U.S. duties on Canadian goods in an interview with “The West Block” on Global News that aired Sunday. Hoekstra referred to last week’s agreement with the United Kingdom, which lifted some sector-specific tariffs—including on 100,000 British cars a year—but otherwise kept Trump’s 10 per cent “reciprocal” tariff in place as “an example of where we will be moving in the future.” The Trump administration has said it would eventually replace its fentanyl-related tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico with a 12 per cent “reciprocal” tariff on non-USMCA goods. Hoekstra said Trump “will take a holistic approach” to the USMCA review, considering things such as Canada’s failure to meet its spending commitment to NATO.
