The Canadian billionaire entrepreneur will step down in January, just days after Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor’s surprise resignation. Salesforce acquired the communications platform in 2020 in a US$27.7-billion deal following Slack’s 2019 IPO. (The Logic)
Talking point: It’s been two years since Salesforce said it would acquire Slack, which B.C. native Butterfield founded in Vancouver in 2009, some years after he co-founded the photo-sharing platform Flickr. Insider first reported Butterfield’s resignation, which Salesforce announced in an internal memo. Lidiane Jones, Salesforce’s vice-president in charge of cloud commerce, will replace him. In an internal Slack message, Butterfield said his departure had nothing to do with Taylor’s. “Planning has been in the works for several months. Just weird timing!” Two other Slack executives, including its chief product officer, are also leaving. Meanwhile, Mark Nelson, the CEO of Tableau Software—which Salesforce acquired in 2019—resigned a day after Taylor.
