The Ottawa-based e-commerce company could take vapes off merchants’ virtual store shelves as early as this week, after a bipartisan campaign in the United States pushed the company to do something about a booming market of unregulated and illegal electronic cigarettes. (Reuters)
Talking point: Shopify’s decision to ban vape products is a win for 25 state attorneys general, who have been asking the company to take action since last year. It’s not immediately clear if the ban will apply outside of the U.S. Shopify spokesperson Ben McConaghy told The Logic that the company always prohibits illegal activity and takes action when merchants violate its policies. He said Shopify adjusts its approach to enforcement when legal changes call for it. Last year, Shopify closed rapper Kanye West’s (also known as Ye) shop, which was selling swastika T-shirts. As The Logic reported, internal documents showed the store was banned over a potential risk of fraud, not Nazi symbolism.
