Talking point: The new crafter designation will apply to employees working directly on Shopify’s products and services. The company framed it as a way of ensuring that staff don’t need to move into management roles to earn more. It’s the second recent update to how the firm pays its workers. In September 2022, it launched a new system that lets employees set their own mix of wages and equity. Shopify’s latest career-track changes come a month after Meta reportedly instructed some managers and directors to switch into individual contributor roles, or exit, in what CEO Mark Zuckerberg has called the “Year of Efficiency.” Fellow Silicon Valley stalwart Google has long maintained a level-based system for classifying its engineers.
