The Department of Finance appointed the long-time public servant and human rights lawyer for a five-year term as commissioner of the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) beginning on Nov. 7. (The Logic)

Talking point: Miller takes the helm of the FCAC as it expands its mandate to include oversight of open banking in Canada. The federal Liberals announced FCAC, which supervises federally regulated financial institutions with a focus on consumer rights, as the organization in charge of the file in their April budget. Open banking would require financial institutions to provide data on activity from chequing and savings accounts and other financial products in a secure, standardized format at a customer’s request. As a result, fintech services like budgeting apps and accounting software will become more reliable and secure.
