Freedom Mobile began life as Wind Mobile under Globalive chair Anthony Lacavera. Now, Globalive is interested in buying Shaw’s discount cellphone-provider brand as Rogers seeks to complete its acquisition of the parent company, Lacavera told BNN Bloomberg. (The Globe and Mail, BNN Bloomberg)
Talking point: Divesting Freedom Mobile could be one way of addressing Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne’s warning that he’ll block a deal that leads to the “wholesale” transfer of Shaw’s wireless-spectrum licences to Rogers. Rogers isn’t talking to Quebecor, according to The Globe and Mail, despite CEO Pierre Karl Péladeau’s interest in combining Freedom with Videotron’s cellphone division to create a new national wireless competitor for Rogers, Bell and Telus.
