Talking point: The RCMP’s announcement comes after nearly a month of refusing to say whether it used the company’s controversial software, which uses a database of three billion photos collected from the internet, and one day after Clearview admitted its entire customer list was stolen. Several other Canadian police services have revealed they’ve used the service. The federal privacy commissioner and three of its provincial counterparts launched an investigation into Clearview last week. The RCMP said it will work with the federal commissioner to develop guidelines around facial recognition. The agency has clashed with the federal commissioner on the use of controversial tech tools in the past: in 2017, the federal privacy watchdog accused the RCMP of illegally collecting Canadians’ cellphone data.
