Royal Bank of Canada’s innovation and startup banking division has hired two former Silicon Valley Bank Canada staff—Filip Stoj and Andrew Owusu-Sefa—to focus on banking for early-stage startups. RBCx has also hired Anne Woods and Rebecca Ross from SVB Canada to expand the bank’s life-sciences practice. (The Logic)
Talking point: Canada’s banks are picking up the pieces from Silicon Valley Bank’s implosion in March. In September, Scotiabank and its subsidiary Roynat Capital hired four former SVB employees to expand financing for Canada’s startups. TD Bank has also hired at least four former executives from SVB Canada, and CIBC’s innovation arm brought on two former staffers from its U.S. division. National Bank acquired SVB’s Canadian loan portfolio in August. While the deal didn’t include any SVB employees, Michael Denham, National Bank’s executive vice-president for commercial and private banking, told The Logic at the time he was meeting with former staffers to see who might be a good fit for National Bank.
