Winnipeg-based Broadband Communications North (BCN) will provide broadband service to the northern Manitoba community. Ottawa-headquartered Rock Networks, a Canadian distributor for OneWeb’s low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation, will build the link-up. (The Logic)
Talking point: Internet service provider (ISP) BCN is an Indigenous-run non-profit. It aims to launch the service next spring, and expand to 24 First Nations communities in total over five years. “There’s a lot of satellite-only-connected communities in Canada today,” Rock CEO Joe Hickey told The Logic earlier this month. London-based OneWeb has launched the bulk of its constellation, and turned on connectivity above the 50th parallel north, covering much of Manitoba. Direct-to-consumer Starlink has already signed up some Canadian consumers, and Canadian champion Telesat is years away. That leaves OneWeb as the LEO to which local ISPs, particularly ones in remote areas, can link up.
