Talking point: As students, Peripheral co-founders Kelvin Cui and Mustafa Khan played leading roles on the University of Toronto’s formula-style and self-driving car racing teams. They’ve now turned their work on motorsport sensors to other games. Peripheral’s product combines cameras and software to generate video from a wide range of angles, so that broadcasters and leagues can let fans watch the action from whatever viewpoint they want. Teaching robots to perceive what they see is a major challenge. Other startups are building so-called “world models,” which are meant to have a better understanding of how physics and cause-and-effect work in real life.
