Canadian technology company ThinkData Works will lead an $8-million project with the U.S. data-mining firm and the Canadian auto-parts maker, with $3.5 million in funding from the federally-backed Next Generation Manufacturing Canada supercluster. The platform, which will eventually be open to all Canadian manufacturers, will predict and suggest preventive measures for potential supply-chain disruptions. (The Logic)
Talking point: As the semiconductor chip shortage continues to hamstring the auto industry, the partnership shows how companies are adapting to the pandemic’s supply-chain snags—while also extending the government’s support of data-mining firms. Palantir has worked with the Canadian defence department, and in August 2019 hired David MacNaughton, former Canadian ambassador to the U.S., to build out its Canadian business. When announcing the project, MacNaughton said the firm has had “positive industry impacts” working on supply-chain issues across the world. ThinkData CEO Bryan Smith added that the project aims to “make organizations feel as though they took the red pill in the Matrix.”
