Talking point: Slashing red tape was a theme of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s election campaign. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly told The Logic in May that she had already received the directive for Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, and highlighted the lengthy application process for the Strategic Innovation Fund as a likely target. The Treasury Board said one of the goals of the review is to unlock more private capital, citing a Canadian Federation of Independent Business report that found regulations cost Canadian businesses $51.5 billion in 2024. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne has also asked ministers to find “ambitious savings” as he prepares to draft the fall budget.
