Talking point: Opendoor, which operates in 44 U.S. markets, has about 10 employees in Canada now and no office. It will open one if it reaches “a critical mass of talent in one city,” Michael Gentili, senior director of software engineering, said in an email to The Logic. The Canadian staff will help build Opendoor’s financial platforms, pricing systems and technology infrastructure. The company, which went public in 2020 in a SPAC deal, experienced what it called a “year of record growth,” adding 1,000 staff. Opendoor’s hiring push comes as other firms beef up their Canadian operations amid a heated market for tech talent.
