Talking point: Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith signed an agreement last month that could see Ottawa scrap its emissions cap for oil and gas production and exempt Alberta from federal clean electricity regulations. Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy confirmed Thursday that his province, which supports the potential pipeline, wants a similar deal to help develop critical minerals projects in northern Ontario. “I think what we wanted to signal is our support for doing what it takes to get things done in collaboration with all provinces,” he said when asked for specifics. Federal Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne weighed in: “We want to act quickly, but also in a way that would be responsible.”
