An agreement with a subsidiary of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, announced by provincial infrastructure minister Kinga Surma, is to hook up 15,000 homes and businesses in rural, remote and northern communities starting in June 2025. Ontario chose the U.S.-based provider over New Brunswick’s Xplore, the other finalist in the bidding. The initial plan was to connect 43,000 customers and to announce the winning bidder last summer. Talking point: Starlink is required to work with eligible Indigenous communities, to ensure  equal access to its services and to create local economic opportunities. By its own numbers, the province has connected 100,000 customers so far and is promising to add 450,000 more before 2026. The province has promised to connect every community in Ontario to high-speed internet service by the end of next year.
