Talking point: The regulation will also restrict the use of retired athletes, social media influencers, cartoons, entertainers, symbols and figures that “would likely be expected to appeal to minors.” Online sports betting has been legal in Canada since 2021 with Ontario being the first to open the door to single-event wagers. Youth and mental-health advocates have been calling for stricter regulation of gambling ads amid concerns over increasing rates of gambling addiction as sports betting has boomed. Senator Marty Deacon introduced a federal bill in June with similar objectives to Ontario’s new rules.
