Talking point: Nvidia was the world’s most prolific large-scale investor in AI in 2023, the Financial Times reported, citing data from Dealroom. That’s a feat in a year when tech giants launched an AI-investing arms race as they scrambled to catch up with Microsoft-funded OpenAI’s lead following the blockbuster release of ChatGPT. The hot funding environment is particularly notable given the slowdown in venture capital overall. Nvidia participated in 35 deals in 2023, outpacing its investments in the previous year by about six times, according to Dealroom. One of those deals was Toronto AI startup Cohere’s US$270-million Series C round in June. Most recently, Nvidia has invested in cloud service providers that work with companies building AI services, the company said.
