Talking point: Google has fired the latest salvo in an AI arms race among tech giants, and is doing so at a time of turmoil for OpenAI. The San Francisco startup has added an observer from major investor Microsoft to its board after a high-profile boardroom drama that saw CEO Sam Altman fired and rehired over the course of five days. Google has so far lagged OpenAI, releasing Bard to middling reviews in March, four months after ChatGPT’s blockbuster release. One thing Google hopes will give it an edge: it designed a version of Gemini to run natively on mobile phones.
