Cia Edmonds, whose daughter Maya Gebala was shot in the head and neck during the Feb. 10 mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Elementary School, said in a B.C. supreme court filing that ChatGPT equipped shooter Jesse Van Rootselaar “with information, guidance and assistance” in planning the attack. The lawsuit also claims the company knew of Van Rootselaar’s problematic interactions with the chatbot yet failed to notify public security authorities. Gebala’s younger sister Dahlia, who sheltered in place during the shooting, is also listed as a plaintiff.  (The Logic)

Talking point: The suit claims Van Rootselaar described scenarios involving gun violence on her ChatGPT account in the summer of 2025, with the chatbot taking on the role of Van Rootselaar’s “mental health counsellor or pseudo-therapist, collaborator, trusted confidante, friend and ally.” Despite flagging the content, the suit claims OpenAI only banned the account, and Van Rootselaar simply opened another. Edmonds’ claims have not been proven in court. Van Rootselaar killed eight people before taking her own life. “OpenAI remains committed to working with government and law enforcement officials to make meaningful changes that help prevent tragedies like this in the future,” OpenAI spokesperson Jamie Radice said in a statement to The Logic.
