Councillors for the Greater Toronto Area city voted Wednesday to ban the “establishment of major digital infrastructure facilities” for a year while city staff study planning, zoning and other applicable policies to ensure they address environmental, tax and other issues. Meanwhile, Toronto city councillors called for further review of proposed data centres in suburbs Etobicoke and Scarborough. (Toronto Star, The Logic)
Talking point: Mississauga joins a small number of Canadian municipalities that have put compute facilities on a time out after local opposition to possible projects. Rocky View County in Alberta approved a data centre pause last week, pending a new strategy for emerging sectors and new regulations. Beacon AI already has approval to build there, as part of a US$10-billion plan for new facilities. In Hamilton, Ont., meanwhile, council voted against a moratorium earlier this month.
