Talking point: Leading open source AI models can do most of the things the closed, proprietary systems developed by the likes of OpenAI and Anthropic can—or at least the ones that matter to most consumers and businesses. But they’re harder to adopt, since they don’t come in the neat package of ChatGPT or Claude. Mozilla and Mila are trying to close that ease-of-use gap. “We want to see open source across that whole stack,” Mozilla Foundation president Mark Surman told The Logic earlier this year. Mila has dedicated a team of researchers to the effort, CEO Valérie Pisano said at the time. The new project is part of Mozilla’s broader effort to assemble an international alliance of firms and research centres focused on freely accessible AI.
