Talking point: Analysts see the new app as Meta’s bid to compete with Twitter, which has been mired with challenges since billionaire Elon Musk took over. Meta has a history of cloning defining features from other social media apps, such as launching Instagram Stories to replicate Snapchat and Reels to compete with TikTok. Other microblogging startups like Mastodon and Donald Trump’s Truth Social have gained users but still aren’t meaningful Twitter contenders. Threads’s launch would come days after Musk announced that Twitter users will only be able to read a certain number of posts a day, citing concerns over “extreme levels of data scraping” and “system manipulation.” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Musk have also publicly challenged each other to a physical fight.
