Talking point: Meta is considering adding machine-made chat to WhatsApp and Messenger, and AI-generated ads across its social platforms, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on an April earnings call. Tech giants have piled into generative AI, directly or via investments, seeing an opportunity to exercise the massive compute power of their cloud arms to run these large language models. But Meta’s not selling space. “For us, it’s way better if the industry standardizes on the basic tools we’re using,” Zuckerberg noted. And it’s enlisting allies to the effort. On Tuesday, Meta also published a statement of support for its AI approach, signed by AI optimists including VC Marc Andreessen and Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke. “Responsible and open innovation gives us all a stake in the AI development process,” offering “visibility, scrutiny and trust,” it claims, in what appears to be a riposte to the existential worriers’ own succinct statement.
