Talking point: Zuckerberg finally broke his silence after The Wall Street Journal published an investigation into the company based on documents Haugen provided. He argued it doesn’t prioritize profit over people’s safety and well-being. Haugen had testified that Facebook’s products “harm children, stoke division and weaken our democracy.” Not everyone is buying Zuckerberg’s display of good intentions. One critic pointed out his response “doesn’t make any sense,” and he and others compared Facebook’s strategy to that of Big Tobacco: hook young users, and employ researchers to promote its product, among other tactics. Meanwhile, Facebook has reportedly stalled rolling out new products and paused working on some existing ones amid the backlash.
