General partner Andre Charoo plans to put between US$500,000 and US$1 million into 25 companies; the firm has already made 18 investments totalling US$9 million from the fund. Limited partners include Inovia Capital, where Charoo is also a venture partner, as well as Tiger Global, Insight Partners and Plexo Capital. (The Logic)
Talking point: Maple is sector- and geography-agnostic; investments span everything from Toronto-headquartered Ritual, a restaurant-tech firm, to Seoul-based Dongnae, a real estate platform. It instead focuses on Canadian founders, who Charoo told The Logic share a “chip on their shoulder” compared to U.S. peers from better-known schools and ecosystems. The diversity of major Canadian cities also helps startups recruit effective teams. He cites his own experience as an early employee at Canadian co-founded Uber and Hired as an asset for portfolio firms, and has assembled an advisory board with similar experience. That’s “a critical stage in the life of a startup,” said Charoo, who is also co-chair of C100. “There’s very few … fund managers out there” with similar expertise.
