Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew announced his intention to ban the platforms for children on Saturday, but has yet to say what age he’s considering as a cut off or how the ban would work. (The Logic)
Talking point: The move would put Manitoba ahead of Ottawa, which is also considering a federal social media ban for children under the age of 14. Cultural Minister Marc Miller has still not said when he plans to table legislation aimed at protecting children from online harms. A group of child advocates met with the prime minister’s staff Monday morning to demand the federal government move faster to protect kids online, and were told the government could table the bill later this spring or next fall. Sara Austin, the founder of Children First Canada, said tech platforms can’t be trusted to protect children’s interests, and called the federal delay unacceptable. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is also looking into a ban, and said in March his government would ask residents for their views on the idea.
