Seat maker LM Manufacturing, jointly owned by the Ontario-based auto-parts maker and LAN Manufacturing, temporarily laid off 650 employees at its Michigan plant. Meanwhile, the United Auto Workers union said Friday that it would expand its ongoing strike to General Motors and Stellantis parts distribution centres across the U.S. (The Globe and Mail, The Logic)
Talking point: LM Manufacturing supplies seats for the Ford Bronco, which is made in a plant where workers are on strike. Magna told The Globe and Mail it was too soon to say whether other operations will be affected. The move comes as the UAW is targeting parts distribution centres where it says members are stuck in a lower wage tier. However, while the Ford assembly plant remains on strike in Michigan, the UAW did not expand its strike on Ford on Friday, with UAW President Shawn Fain saying the automaker seems “serious about reaching a deal” with the union. Meanwhile, Unifor’s unionized autoworkers in Canada will vote over the weekend whether to ratify a potential new contract with Ford’s Canadian branch.
