Talking point: Negotiations hit a snag in December when Loblaw and Walmart executives said they wouldn’t sign on, arguing the voluntary code would raise grocery prices. In February, a House of Commons committee studying food prices urged the companies to sign the code or face legislation. Pressure to sign the code comes as Loblaw faces intense public backlash for what many see as its role in the cost-of-living crisis. The code’s main principles haven’t changed in the current draft, but details around certain scenarios, like dispute resolution over price negotiations between suppliers and retailers, have been clarified, Loblaw’s chief legal officer Nick Henn told The Canadian Press. “We’re much less concerned about the code leading to higher prices,” he said. Walmart has not yet agreed to sign the code.
