Talking point: Lawyers use Spellbook’s generative tools to draft and review contracts; CEO Scott Stevenson says it considerably speeds up the process and helps identify errors. The company started building legal automation software, launching its now-namesake AI product in summer 2022 initially as a marketing tactic. But “the growth was just explosive,” Stevenson told The Logic in an interview last month. It raised a $10.9-million seed round last May. Spellbook is built atop a mix of large language models—ones from Anthropic, Cohere and OpenAI—which it fine-tunes for legal tasks. It’s also working on features to let clients upload their own back-catalogue of documents to improve the outcomes of Spellbook’s tools. Its clients have mostly been small law firms and single-partner practices. It’ll use the new funding to build out its customer base and develop new features.
