The Quebec-based pension is investing about $1.76 billion in Altius Telecom Infrastructure Trust, a company that owns and operates more than 258,000 telecom towers across India. (The Logic)
Talking point: Brookfield will remain Altius’s largest shareholder. Singapore’s GIC and British Columbia Investment Management (BCI) are also existing investors. La Caisse had previously invested in telecom towers across Canada, the U.S., Europe and New Zealand, according to last year’s disclosures. Last year, it paid $1.26 billion for a 49.9 per cent stake in Terrion, which owns roughly 3,000 former Telus tower sites. The deal adds to Canadian pension funds’ growing exposure to Indian infrastructure. Earlier this week, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan backed the latest fund from India’s National Investment and Infrastructure Fund, and La Caisse already holds investments in Indian renewable-energy and infrastructure companies including Azure Power and Apraava Energy.
