James B. Beam Distilling Co., which makes the popular whiskey, said it will take a year-long break from distilling at its main facility in Clermont, Ky. in 2026 as it takes “the opportunity to invest in site enhancements.” (The Logic)
Talking point: The company owned by Suntory Global Spirits said in a statement sent by spokesperson Allison McEneaney that it will keep things flowing at its craft distillery in Clermont and larger site in Boston, Ky. In October, the Kentucky Distillers’ Association said a record 16.1 million aging barrels of bourbon were in warehouses across the state—the only place in the world where such stored spirits are taxed. The association said distillers were paying US$75 million in taxes on those barrels this year, up 27 per cent from 2024. After President Donald Trump targeted Canada with tariffs, several provinces stopped selling U.S. alcohol and Ottawa hit Kentucky bourbon with counter-tariffs. As of September, Canada’s bourbon imports were down nearly 60 per cent this year.
