Talking point: Wilmot joins Interac from ACI Worldwide, a Florida-based payments processing company where he was most recently chief product officer. Interac describes itself as “the foundation of Canada’s payment system,” running debit and e-transfer networks connecting to more than 300 financial institutions. Under O’Connell, Interac announced in May its expansion into digital identity, offering software that allows companies to authenticate users before granting them access to services. The leadership change also comes amid pressures on non-profit payments-infrastructure operator Payments Canada to finally launch the Real-Time Rail system, which has been repeatedly delayed. Interac is one of the contractors tapped to help build part of the system.
