Talking point: Ontario’s Progressive Conservative government set up IPON in January 2022, following the February 2020 recommendations of a panel set up in part to study how best to support the in-province commercialization of research produced at universities and colleges. Thursday’s batch are the first organizations for which the agency announced support; it will also provide programming for businesses. IPON has convened a working group of colleges and universities to come up with commercialization metrics and tailor assistance to those institutions’ needs. “Some of them have sophisticated programs and may not need our supports,” CEO Peter Cowan recently told The Logic.
