Meta confirmed to The Verge that it’s testing a feature called IG Candid that asks users to share a photo within a two-minute window at different times during the day. A spokesperson said the feature is “an internal prototype.” (The Verge)

Talking point: IG Candid’s design is almost identical to BeReal, a popular social media app and Instagram competitor. BeReal is currently the No.1 social networking app on the U.S. App Store, and is one of several apps claiming to be tools to stay in touch with close friends. “If you want to become an influencer you can stay on TikTok and Instagram,” the app tells users. Meta’s move comes as it struggles to maintain Facebook’s position as a top social media app and is under pressure to grow its user base among Meta-owned apps to compete with TikTok. Instagram has a history of copying rivals, such as adding a Stories feature to imitate Snapchat and launching Reels in 2020 to emulate TikTok. Users—including Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian—were vocal against changes that added Reels to feeds last month and Instagram head Adam Mosseri was forced to walk them back.
