Talking point: This is Facebook’s second attempt to emulate TikTok. In July, it shut down Lasso after the app had attracted about 10 million downloads compared with TikTok’s two billion. As a feature within Instagram, Reels will come with a much larger built-in active user base. Wednesday’s launch significantly expands the number of countries in which Reels is available. In July, it tested it in India after the country banned TikTok. It’s also been tested in Brazil, France and Germany. The mass expansion comes as U.S. President Donald Trump threatens to ban TikTok from the U.S. unless it sells to an American company. Microsoft and two other buyers are in talks with the firm about acquiring its U.S. assets. TikTok did get some good news. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he didn’t think the app should be banned.
