Talking point: Guilbeault’s comments come after Facebook said it would stop Australians from sharing news if the government goes ahead with a plan to make the social media company pay local media for content it shares. Australia appears to be getting ready for a fight with Facebook. As Josh Frydenberg, the country’s treasurer, put it: “We won’t be responding to coercion or heavy-handed tactics, wherever they come from.” Guibeault also denounced “any form of threats” Wednesday. He has said he plans to talk to officials in Australia before rolling out a plan to provide long-term aid to the media sector. Asked for a response, Facebook Canada referred The Logic to comments this week from vice-president of global news partnerships Campbell Brown, who said the Australian move was a last choice. “Removing news in Australia is not the outcome we’ve been working towards.”
