Bish LNG, a Haisla Nation company, has applied to acquire the environmental licences and other assets for Kitimat LNG, a major export project that was abandoned in 2021. The Globe and Mail first reported the move, which is subject to regulatory approval. (The Logic, The Globe and Mail)
Talking point: Haisla is among the First Nations most supportive of growing Canada’s liquefied natural gas exports. The Indigenous community already owns a 50.1 per cent stake in the US$4-billion Cedar LNG project, which is expected to come online in late 2028. By securing Kitimat LNG’s environmental permits, the nation could acquire a valuable asset should a developer choose to revive it. The project’s original proponents, U.S. energy giant Chevron and Australia’s Woodside Energy, shelved Kitimat LNG due to a lack of international buyers. Chevron suffered a US$2.2-billion writedown following the decision, while Woodside devalued its assets by US$720 million.
