Despite a new agreement that will see Google pay some Canadian news outlets to include their stories in a “Google News Showcase,” Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault said he’ll keep working on a framework to make digital platforms pay content companies. (The Logic)
Talking point: The Globe and Mail announced its place in the agreement in a story this morning. How long the deal lasts and how much Google will pay weren’t disclosed. Major publishers Torstar and Postmedia aren’t in the mix (yet). Big Tech companies like Google and Facebook have been hoping to stay ahead of Guilbeault’s promised plans to force them to pay publishers whose stories are linked from the global giants’ platforms. News Media Canada chair Jamie Irving said the media outlets are being picked off by predators and need to negotiate collectively. Guilbeault said he wants a “comprehensive, coherent and equitable” result, and the cooperation needs to be international.
