Talking point: Google is the latest major tech company to promise to combat homelessness and promote housing affordability in the communities where it operates—problems that some residents have accused Big Tech of causing or worsening. Earlier in June, Amazon donated US$8 million to fight homelessness in two cities where its headquarters are located: Seattle and Arlington, Va. However, that move followed the company’s efforts to kill a proposed “head tax” on businesses that would have been used to fund affordable-housing efforts in Seattle. Legislators are looking at similar measures in San Francisco, and officials have proposed proposed taxes on companies with highly paid CEOs, on newly public companies, and on Uber and Lyft ride revenues.
