Talking point: It’s the latest in a series of disputes between the two companies, which have also beefed over other smart-speaker features. Google’s soured collaboration with Sonos has become symbolic of the difficulties of competing with Big Tech giants. Patrick Spence, Sonos CEO and a former BlackBerry executive, told The Logic in January that he was “standing up not only for ourselves, but for the community of companies similarly situated,” after a win over Google in January in a case about a different set of patents. Google said in the new complaint that it was “proud of its multi-year partnership with Sonos,” for which it built special integrations. Sonos chief legal officer Eddie Lazarus told The Logic in an emailed statement Monday that Google’s move is an intimidation tactic to avoid paying the company royalties and “grind down a smaller competitor.”
