Bringing an end to their two-year dispute, Amazon announced Thursday that Google subsidiary YouTube will now appear on Amazon’s Fire TV devices and smart TVs in the coming months, and other YouTube apps—such as YouTube Kids and YouTube TV—will be added later this year. Talking point: The spat began in 2017, when Google pulled its YouTube video app from Amazon’s Fire TV after Amazon refused to sell some Google products that competed with the online shopping giant’s own products. In late 2018, Amazon reversed course and started selling those Google products. The move will certainly benefit both companies now that their consumers can access each streaming platform on the other’s devices—the major exception is that there are no plans for a YouTube app on Amazon’s Echo Show smartspeaker. As streaming options continue to pop up—with Disney being the most recent player—ending their dispute will allow Google and Amazon to focus their attention on the new rivals.
