Talking point: Unifor has pushed hard in the past year for electric-vehicle investments in Canada to help reinvent auto-manufacturing plants amid deep job cuts in the sector. GM was the holdout among the Detroit Three automakers in agreeing to build EVs in Canada. Ford announced a $1.8-billion investment in September 2020 to build electric vehicles at its Oakville, Ont. plant. Fiat Chrysler followed suit with a commitment of up to $1.5 billion to retool its Windsor, Ont. plant for plug-in- or hybrid-vehicle manufacturing. The tentative agreement signals a shift for the company. Leading up to GM’s labour negotiations, an industry insider familiar with discussions told The Logic the company’s U.S. facilities had enough manufacturing capacity for its growing fleet of electric cars.
