Talking point: Shaw is trying to sell Freedom Mobile to gain regulators’ approval for a buyout by Rogers. Since the federal Competition Bureau has said an orphaned Freedom wouldn’t play the same competitive role in the cellphone market that Shaw now does (partly because it would lose access to Shaw’s existing wired network), potential buyers have new reason to show they could really fight in the national arena. Telus already has its own discount cellphone brand, Koodo, so letting a Globalive-owned Freedom use Telus’s network to compete with both Telus and Koodo would be … complicated. Meanwhile, Reuters reported that Bell and Telus have written to the government asking that Shaw not be allowed to sell Freedom to Quebecor, another suitor. Telus did not respond to questions from The Logic by deadline.
