Zegarac will replace acting CEO Michael Nobrega. The latter had been in the role since the departure of former CEO Will Fleissig—who was present during the announcement of the agency’s partnership with Sidewalk Labs—in July 2018. Zegarac will start on August 19. (The Logic)
Talking point: The timing of Zegarac’s start in the role will put him in place ahead of a crucial vote on whether the agency will continue its partnership with Sidewalk Labs on the Quayside development. That call was scheduled to happen in September, but is now likely to be delayed by as many as three months. But Zegarac won’t be there for the initial public consultation on the proposal, as the agency received the Master Innovation and Development Plan from Sidewalk Labs on Monday, and plans to release it in the coming days. Zegarac has deep ties with Ontario’s provincial government, which will need to approve the plan. He spent the past 33 years working for the province, including the last three years as deputy minister of infrastructure, the ministry responsible for waterfront revitalization. The provincial government has been more critical of Waterfront Toronto’s operations than the federal government or the City of Toronto. Following an auditor general’s report in December 2018, Ontario fired all three of its representatives on the agency’s board of directors.
