Canada’s ex-envoy to the United States will work in the “office of the CEO” that new chief executive Harry Culham has established under executive vice-president Amy South. CIBC’s announcement noted MacNaughton’s experience renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement and chairing communications and consulting firm StrategyCorp, which Culham said give him “unmatched insights in areas such as global trade and public policy.” (The Logic)
Talking point: CIBC’s announcement doesn’t mention MacNaughton’s post-diplomacy stint as president of Palantir Technologies Canada, during which the federal ethics commissioner found he violated conflict-of-interest rules (though not lobbying ones). MacNaughton still publicly names the U.S.-headquartered data-mining and analytics company as his employer, though CIBC spokesperson Tom Wallis told The Logic MacNaughton no longer works there; a filing with the British Columbia lobbying registry says MacNaughton ceased being Palantir Technologies Canada’s “senior officer” in August 2024. Neither MacNaughton nor Palantir responded to inquiries.
