As the subsidiary of U.S. defence giant RTX contemplates plans for new aircraft engines, the federal government is ready to pay to have them built in Canada, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said, after announcing a $34-million contribution toward modernizing the company’s Longueuil, Que., facility. Talking point: The firm has always been U.S.-owned, but Joly said it makes engines for numerous aircraft manufacturers around the globe, it’s been in Quebec for 95 years and she wants it to be there for 95 more. “I don’t think people in the aerospace sector would think that Pratt & Whitney Canada is actually an American company,” she said. The minister said she likes to see both Canadian-headquartered companies expanding operations outside Canada and foreign-owned ones expanding here—both are “Canadian” in the government’s eyes.
