Talking point: Product—the management of which tools and services to develop, and how—is such a venerated discipline within Shopify that CEO Tobi Lütke has periodically stepped in to run it himself. Coates was in charge of the firm’s core software system, while former COO Kaz Nejatian, who recently became CEO of Opendoor, oversaw the many add-ons Shopify sells to merchants. Coates joined Shopify via its acquisition of startup Handshake in May 2019, and reportedly left the firm this summer. At OpenAI, he’ll be in charge of integrating apps from other developers with ChatGPT, letting users employ the bot as an operating system or command centre to, say, make Spotify playlists or browse Zillow listings. Meanwhile, Shopify hired former Cohere executive Eric Hu as its new principal designer.
